The incident took place around 8:23 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 18, when the Yonkers Fire Department Engine Company 310 was dispatched to a call of a motor vehicle accident on the Saw Mill River Parkway, said Deputy Chief Joseph Citrone.
When firefighters arrived on the scene they found a car off the parkway and into the river, Citrone said.
They noticed the female driver was trapped in the car with water up to the dashboard and the woman's chest.
Firefighters rushed into the frigid water and removed the woman from the car, Citrone said.
The woman was in the freezing water for an extended period of time and was in shock.
She was rushed by ambulance to St. John's Hospital.
The woman's condition was not known.
